Roman Empress Theodora, Restorer of Icons (AD 843) Constantinople/Istanbul
Theodora was the wife of emperor Theophilus (829- 842), who was the last emperor to support the
destruction of Christian icons. Theodora ruled as empress for 37 years, from 830 to 867. After Theophilus’ death in 842, his wife Theodora restored the use of Christian icons, as had empress Irene 55 years before her. After 843, Christian icons were no longer legally defaced or destroyed. Theodora died around 867.
